Gum Disease

Gum disease, or periodontitis is more common than you think, in fact, some people are not even aware that their mild case of gingivitis has developed into periodontal disease. The only way to tell if you have periodontitis is to schedule a check-up with Westwood Family Dental.

These days everyone seems to be talking about periodontal disease. Entire talk shows are dedicated to periodontitis, but most people are unclear what periodontal disease actually is.

According to recent statistics, three out of four adults have some form of periodontal disease. Periodontitis does not cause pain and unless severe will generally go unnoticed. Early detection and treatment are vital if you want to avoid costly dental procedures.

Gum disease, or periodontitis is an infection of the gums that is caused by a film of bacteria, or plaque, that coats everyone’s teeth. Gum disease can happen to anyone, but is much more common among adults.

Gingivitis is the early stages of gum disease and is entirely treatable. Your gums will bleed and become red and swollen, but as the disease begins to progress it can get travel to the bone. Your bones support your teeth and once that happens, the damage can be irreversible.

Once periodontitis has advanced to the bone and soft tissue your teeth could become loose and even fall out. Some of the signs of gum disease include:

  • Gums that bleed after brushing or flossing
  • Tender, red, and swollen gums
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Loose or separating teeth
  • Changes in the way your teeth fit together
  • Pus between your teeth and gums
  • Gums that have pulled away from your teeth
  • Although gum disease is more common in adults, it can happen to anyone, including children.
