The word braces conjures up all sorts of images. Decades ago braces were a jail sentence to teenagers who would have to wear unattractive metal brackets along with uncomfortable headgear at night, but all of that changed when Invisalign® came on to the scene in May of 2000.
Invisalign® aligners are transparent making them much more difficult to see than bracket and wire braces. Patients of Westwood Family Dental will tell you that Invisalign® is much more comfortable than traditional braces and are void of side effects that can occur with traditional orthodontic appliances.
Traditional braces affect the supporting tissues and gums. In fact, traditional metal brackets will cause the roots of your teeth to shorten. Another problem with metal braces is tooth decay, which occurs in up to fifty percent of people who wear metal braces because they cannot be taken off if you are brushing your teeth, eating or visiting the dentist and in need of x-rays.
Patients who have Invisalign® can remove the aligners for cleaning, eating, and dental check- ups. Invisalign® is also more comfortable than traditional mouth wear. Because Invisalign® is less painful than fixed metal braces, patients of Westwood Dental will get a new set of Invisalign® aligners every two weeks. Traditional hardware is adjusted every six weeks with much greater force.
These days everyone wants Invisalign® and if you need braces, you can expect to be able to eat what you want, when you want. All you have to do is remove your Invisalign® aligners. With metal braces, some foods must be avoided so the hardware is not damaged.
When you schedule an appointment with Dr. Katherine Toubian, a preferred Invisalign® provider in Westwood the two of you will determine if you are a candidate for Invisalign®. If you are deemed a good fit, Westwood Family Dental will take x-rays in order for Invisalign® to create the digital 3-D image.
Once your custom aligners are ready, Dr. Toubian and her staff will show you how to use your new Invisalign® aligners that are made of BPA-free irritation free plastic. You will need to wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours every day. As you wear your Invisalign® aligners, your teeth will gently begin to shift into their proper place. Although each patient and case is different, the majority of patients who have Invisalign® aligners will see a noticeable improvement in about 12 months with quicker results in teens.
Call and schedule an appointment with Westwood Family Dental. Straight teeth can be yours in a year, and best of all, they are nearly invisible meaning that you and your Dentist will be the only ones who know you are wearing Invisalign®.
